Library Journal lauded Carter's 2010 work The Insider's Guide to High School as an "...original and much needed book for parents and guardians on students' transition to high school" and concludes that with the book's "valuable, commonsense advice on issues that parents and guardians will face, this would be a great read the spring or summer before a student enters high school as well as a good reference throughout the four years. Highly recommended." In 2011 Carter published his second book with co-author Tim Healey. The Insider's Guide for High School Students is written directly to the student to support a successful transition to high school.
