Lucy English

I was born in Sri Lanka and grew up in London and I now live Bristol. I teach Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. I love my life! I work with gifted new writers, and I foster new talent. I still have time for my own writing though and I write both fiction and poetry.

I have three novels published by Fourth Estate: Selfish People , set in contemporary Bristol; Children of Light ; and Our Dancing Days , set in a Suffolk commune in the 1970s. My most recent novel, The Ice Maiden, is now on Kindle.

I am also a spoken word poet. I won the Bristol Poetry Slam and went on to tour worldwide, performing my poetry at several international festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe, Austin International Poetry Festival, Wordfest, at Calgary in Canada and The Cuirt in Galway, Ireland. I toured South East Asia with the British Council. My two poetry collections Prayer to Imperfection and The Book of Hours are published by Burning Eye Books. The poetry film project of The Book of Hours was shortlisted for the New Media Writing Prize in 2019. My most recent project, Cancer Alley, is an immersive hologram poetry film, and was shown at the Lyra Bristol Poetry Festival in 2024.
