As Chief Correspondent for Reuters in Germany from 1989 to 1997, I found myself covering not only the news but history itself. I reported on all the main events -- especially the fall of the Berlin Wall -- described in "Unchained Eagle." My decision to write the book came after reading the first wave of books in English about the fall of the Wall and disagreeing with some of their analyses. By staying in Germany so long, I got to see the reunification and the effect it had on both eastern and western Germany. After that assignment, I moved to Paris, first to be chief political correspondent there and, since 2003, Religion Editor for Reuters and editor of our religion blog FaithWorld at http://blogs.reuters.com/faithworld.
