I was born in 1940 in the city of Perth, Scotland. As an insufferable sixteen-year-old, I acquired the atrocious habit of writing down various observations in aphoristic form. One of them was: “But surely, in some sense, the perfect actor is still undiscovered.” Anybody who says something like that, is more or less fated to become interested in the world of secret intelligence! At least, so it turned out.

My two main books about intelligence history, namely From Information to Intrigue and (with co-author Bengt Beckman) Swedish Signal Intelligence 1900-1945, are now well established in the scholarly literature about the history of intelligence services. In addition, I have written many articles and reviews in international learned journals and have lectured at several universities and other institutions on historical aspects of intelligence.

My latest book as a new Kindle author is about Makoto Onodera, an important officer of Japanese intelligence during the Second World War. Based in neutral Sweden, he made use of his complex web of contacts with other European intelligence services, to keep the military leadership in Tokyo informed of significant developments in Russia, Germany, USA and Britain.
