Peter Curtis

I was born in 1937 Slovakia.My family escaped the 1939 Nazi occupation of Prague and, after a tortuous and arduous journey, we arrived in London at the start of the Blitz. My parents divorced, the result I'm sure of their hardships and separations. I grew up and went to Guys Hospital Medical School in England. I ended up in 1967 as a country doctor in Hampshire and wrote a number of short stories for magazines. In 1976 As a result of GP' s low salaries in those days and my desire to expand horizons, I, my wife and two boys migrated to the USA where I helped create the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina. There, I diverted my enthusiasm for literature and writing into academic articles (130) and textbook chapters (10) grants, books (6) and educational curriculum development.

After retiring in 2000, I plunged into researching my Slovak roots.

10 years ago, a trove of family photos, documents and letters arrived to stimulate my writing juices. I decided to write a semi-autobiographical novel starting with our escape from Prague. I wanted to write a good yarn and describe the travails of WW2 refugees - how each individual changed and what happened to their relationships.The Dragontail Buttonhole was published (March 2016) to good reviews. In the second book, Cafe Budapest, the action takes place in France as war is declared on Hitler. (2018 - Awarded the Pacific Northwest Writer's Historical Fiction Prize). PAVEL'S WAR my third novel takes place in the UK just as the London Blitz is starting. It was published in December 2019. 5-star rating and good Kirkus Review.
