STEPHEN MAYBERY, A LIFE ON THE LAM.
Unlike David Copperfield I will not start the storey of my life at the beginning of my life, as for all intents and purposes, my life did not really begin to take form until I had reached the grand old age of twenty one, when I set off for Australia with a steamer trunk full of hopes, very little money together with a naivety, which even at this distance in time, should give me nightmares, had I but managed to acquire a modicum of common sense while trotting along that well known path leading from the cradle to the undertakers. I do not suffer from nightmares.
There was nothing particularly remarkable about my childhood and adolescence, they were no different from most other peoples, they are either sad, happy, or, most usually a mixture of both. My transient years were largely unhappy, and it would be pointless to wish otherwise as I could no more change the pattern of my formative years than alter the fact that I was born with blond hair and blue eyes, that is the way things were. I can not understand how some individuals look upon happiness or good fortune in life as a divine right, and getting in a tantrum when the find that such commodities can not be ordered up as one would beans on toast and a cup of tea at the local greasy spoon. In this life you take what is doled out to you by the fates, then make the best of it, if you do not then you are a fool.
