Estelle B. Breines (1936- ) was born and raised in Brooklyn. Her most recent book (Brooklyn Roots) reflects her memories of those times, viewed from the perspective of retirement from a career as an occupational therapist and educator. She received her BS in Occupational Therapy at age 20, and her PhD in Occupational Therapy at age 50, both from NYU. Her early writing focused on perception, philosophy and the history of her profession, and is foundational material for her field. She has been writing a column on therapeutic activities for Advance for Occupational Therapy Practitioners since 1994. At the urging of her readers, she is currently continuing her memoirs beyond the years she lived in Brooklyn, to her life on a small farm in western NJ, where she resides with her husband of 55 years.
