sallysense

The poems of sallysense span more than 25 years' life experience. They are acute observations on the twin processes of social fragmentation and hopeful rebuilding. Sometimes simple enough and even written for children, and other times full of poetic imagination aimed at an insightful social commentary, the poems are contemporary, cutting edge, and still delightful.

They have subtle rhythms and offer multiple levels of interpretation, and therein is their delight.

This first collection of poems should find itself into many a library, and bring the reader close to the mind and heart of sallysense.

"in a sallysense..." note of thanks...

as gratitude swims throughout channels of language...

its far-reaching sound speaks like heartfelt fins...

propelling the body of this thank you letter...

alongside these lines from appreciation within!...

in a world where written words travel so quickly...

their faster lanes easily speed past raw thought...

as speech multiplies by each mouthful of keystrokes...

now caught in the time frame its clockwork had brought!...

amid millions of terms filling space electronically...

from tall metro web hubs to small village blogs...

internet transport sees passage and scenery...

fly by like commuters viewing life catalogues!...

in the wink of one window sits a journey of verses...

mere reflections to things existence might bring...

its offering curbed by technology's curfew...

as paperless rooms keep poems under their wing!...

until a visitor looked in inspiring book-bound ideas...

of giving word-house foundations a real page feel...

literary know-how kindly answered my queries...

lending groundwork assistance on a print's even keel!...

and now thanks to the help from that overseas teacher...

whose patience and file skills and layout design...

built a paperback home for my poems to move into...

welcoming folks through their door anywhere anytime!...

(the new domicile beyond sallysense dot com)...

(sallysense is just one of the human beings who live on this earthball we call home... a tiny piece of mankind living a life here among everyone else living theirs here too... she wrote these poems and shares them with the hope that somehow or somewhere they'll be helpful to folks!)...

This paperback book, in a sallysense..., came about in an interesting way. And you can find its beginnings in the poem "in a sallysense... note of thanks..." which I wrote for the overseas teacher, stedawa, who happened upon my website, and whose kindness and book knowledge has turned my crude homemade binder-book into a fine paperback book in print.

As for the verses themselves, amid all the different experiences throughout our lifetimes, whether currently or long ago, so many moments pass by partially unnoticed. And so much gets tucked away, only to end up under a latched lid on yesteryear's treasure trunk stored in some corner crevice of our minds.

Among these mementos sit the ones that won't stay quiet, no matter how recently or far back their storage bin has sat with its hinges closed. And it's these instances that fill the roots which feed a lot of my writing, through caring about fairness and well-being in human life here and now, while also opening some mindful treasure trunks for those mementos to add their own notations to the present too.

The varied themes in my poems stem from first or second-hand experiences in one way or another, whether in solitude or among similar bonds through others. The book's generic chapter headings reflect such befitting commonalities, regardless of any further specifics that may follow.

For example, the poem "outside a local venue..." grew from some timeless bonding with a homeless lady I had met, while the poem "that field..." was harvested during an afternoon's stroll through a farmland's local countryside.

The time-lapse scenery of mother nature observing her environmental children struggling so hard to survive these days flows through the poem "father's river...". And "a soldier's voice box reports..." is led by service men and women, brave enough to stand up for fair and square when too many calls to duty are based upon falsehoods. A whispered plea from the young and deceased, brings "a soldier's last breath..." for those who are killed by war.

The poem "a hobo..." describes a simple mealtime shared with me on one of several cross-country treks many years back. And "the peddler..." personifies those wandering travels of someone I've known.

Another poem, "step-brother..." , was penned on recycled paper the same summer I fixed my old porch step, rather than buy a new one. The poem "passage writes..." spans enlightenment's ancestry with royalty.

These examples show just a few of the backgrounds that surround my poems' foundations.

The book is also home to some of my songs. The poem "signs'a the times..." is a song which keeps a few of mankind's lined-up consequences in mind, while "heaven on earth..." holds notes of man's hope in it and was written for an outdoor church service. Several other poems were originally simple songs for a young children's church choir. The "grandpa..." poem was a ballad for my grandfather that I sang to him at his funeral.

These are just several of the general themes throughout the book. When you open its different chapters, you'll see many more.

My hope is to simply share my book with others. For it is as its dedication says, "for all human beings on this earthball we call home... these poems are shared with the hope... that somehow or somewhere... they'll be helpful to folks!..."
