Reginald W. Bibby

Reginald Bibby holds the Board of Governors Research Chair in Sociology at the University of Lethbridge. Born and raised in Edmonton, he received a Ph.D. from Washington State University, an M.A. from The University of Calgary, a B.D. from Southern Seminary in Louisville, and a B.A. from The University of Alberta.

Widely regarded as one of Canada's foremost trend trackers, he has been monitoring social trends through a series of well-known national adult and youth surveys dating back to the 1970s. In the process, he has gathered pioneering and historic data on themes including values, interpersonal relations, quality of life, and religion.

Reg has presented his findings in North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan, speaking at universities including McMaster, Queen's, Toronto, UBC, Oxford, Notre Dame, and Harvard. But he has consciously put considerable effort into disseminating his work well beyond formal academic settings. His surveys have been the basis for eleven best-selling books, with two more released in the past year - The Emerging Millennials and 10 Things We All Have to Know About Teens. To date, close to 150,000 copies of his books have been sold.

One of Canada's better-known academics, his work has been covered in virtually all of the country's major dailies and magazines, including cover treatment by the no. 1 national magazine, Maclean's, of "Canada's Teens" in 2001, "The Boomer Factor" in July 2006, and "The Emerging Millennials" in April of 2009. His extensive national television and radio appearances over the years have included Canada AM, The National, Question Period, The CTV National News, As It Happens, Morningside, Sounds Like Canada, Cross Country Check Up, and Sunday Edition. In the United States, his work has been given exposure by such news outlets as The New York Times, the USA Today, CNN, The Wall Street Journal, the Christian Science Monitor, the Chicago Tribune, The Los Angeles Times, and the National Catholic Reporter.

Reg's efforts to share his findings widely have not gone unnoticed. Described by the Montreal Gazette as "something of a Canadian institution," he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2006 in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the nation. For those who may not know, that is about the highest honor a person "up there" can receive.

He loves life and ideas, family and sports - and people who like to laugh. He invites you to take a look at some of his work.
