David Allan Reeves

David Allan Reeves was born on November 12, 1969 in Mobile, Alabama. David graduated from Jackson Academy high school in 1988 in Jackson, Alabama. He studied psychology and art at the University of South Alabama in Mobile and Troy State University-Montgomery. His book is a message of hope for drug addicts and their families.

He started writing this book when he was thirty-seven years old, had been in prison for seven years, and clean for barely three years. When he started writing, it wasn't his intention to publish a book. It didn't cross David's mind until he started letting other people read what he had written and they encouraged him to continue writing. Once he started, he just couldn't stop. It gave purpose to what he felt like an otherwise meaningless existence.

David went back to the beginning of his life and wrote until he reached the present. By then, David had turned thirty-nine and had close to five years of uninterrupted sobriety. He learned a lot about addiction while writing this book, much more than he would have learned otherwise. The act of sitting down and writing for many hours each day made him think long and hard about his inexplicable behavior. After he finished writing his first rough draft, David continued to learn more about addiction by reading everything about the subject he could get his hands on. The urge to keep adding what he was continuing to learn was strong, but at that rate, he would never have finished. Life is a work in progress.

It may seem conceited and egocentric to write a book about one's life and expect others to want to read it, but he feel like it is something he had to do. The alternative would have been to do nothing, and in prison, there is not a whole lot one can do anyway. If David is expecting anything from the readers of this book, he's expecting to scare the hell out of anyone who is using drugs or is even thinking of using. Not everyone who uses will go to the extremes he went to, but why take the chance? Why play Russian roulette.
