Jon J. Hammermeister

Dr. Hammermeister has a unique background as an athlete, a coach, and a scholar. Dr. Hammermeister has published over 100 scholarly works in the field of sport and exercise psychology, ranging from peer-reviewed articles on the antecedents of competitive anxiety, to scholarly works on periodized mental skills training, to textbooks on the art and science of sport coaching. He has consulted for a variety of world class organizations including many professional, major college, and Olympic sport teams. As a consultant for the United States Ski Team, Dr. Hammermeister has been an invited professional staff member at four World Championship and three Olympic Games. He has also worked with many other professional and world class teams in sports such as hockey, tennis, swimming, basketball, track and field, and golf. Before completing his doctorate at the University of Idaho in 1996, he was the head intercollegiate tennis coach at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington where he was named NAIA District 1 Tennis Coach of the Year in 1986. Dr. Hammermeister was then named head men's tennis coach at the University of California, San Diego, where he was one of four finalists for NCAA Division III Coach of the Year in 1990. Dr. Hammermeister is also an accomplished endurance athlete, having won numerous events in the Pacific Northwest and completing 13 Ironman distance triathlons, including the Hawaii Ironman in 1990 and 1995.
