Matthew Gray is a professor at the School of International Liberal Studies (SILS), Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan. Prior to taking up this position in September 2016, he spent over 11 years based at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, Australia. He has also held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 2015-2016, and at the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, UK, in 2011.
From 1997 to early 2005 he worked in the Australia public sector, including in trade promotion roles, defense, and immigration policy.
He is the author of four books: 'Conspiracy Theories in the Middle East: Sources and Politics' (Routledge, 2010); 'Qatar: Politics and the Challenges of Development' (Lynne Rienner, 2013); 'Global Security Watch - Saudi Arabia' (Praeger, 2014), and 'The Economy of the Gulf States' (Agenda, 2019). He has also published widely in particular on the politics and political economy of the Middle East in academic journals and edited books, is a regular media commentator on Middle Eastern events and trends, and has consulted to both firms and government, providing training courses and other services relating to Middle Eastern trends and risks, issues related to political Islam, and advice on the region's cultures.
Dr Gray completed his doctorate at the ANU in 2000, and also holds a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Arts, both from Macquarie University in Sydney.
