Wenwu Zhang

Wenwu Zhang was born in a village in HeNan Province, China. The hardship of his childhood did not lower his apetite for knowledge at all. He dreamed and still has big dreams today.

He received his Bachelors of Engineering degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1992, Master of Engineering degree from Beijing Institute of Control Devices in 1995, and PhD degree from the department of Mech. Eng. of Columbia University in 2002. He is currently a lead engineer in Laser and Metrology Systems Lab., Materials Systems Technologies, General Electric Global Research Center in Schenectady, New York, USA.

Dr. Zhang is a pioneer in the research of microscale laser shock peening and Energy Field Manufacturing, inventor of liquid core fiber laser material processing. He is currently leading the laser micro/nano R&D work in GE GRC. His research interest includes laser material processing, Intelligent EFM, sustainability of engineering and technological innovation methodologies. Dr. Zhang won the 2005 SME Robert A. Dougherty Outstadning Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, 2006 ASME Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award, and the 2006/2008 ASME/MSEC BOSS Award. Dr. Zhang is a member of the Optical Society of America, ASME, Sigma Xi, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and Laser Institute of America.

Dr. Zhang is a fruitful inventor as well as a Chinese science fiction writer. His favorate sport is table tennis. He loves singing. He composed over twenty songs and wrote quite some poems. He loves the nature as you can see from his photo.
