Sara Ashencaen Crabtree

Professor Sara Ashencaen Crabtree MA, PhD, DipSW, FRSA, PFHEA is Professor Emeritus at Bournemouth University, UK and Stavanger University, Norway. She is also a Visiting Academic in the Business School at the University of Hertfordshire. Prior to this she served for many years as Professor of Social & Cultural Diversity in the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences at Bournemouth University (BU), UK.

Sara is the founding member and from (2013-2021) main co-convenor of the Women's Academic Network at BU; former Head of Sociology, Deputy Director of the Centre for Social Work, Sociology & Social Policy and Chair of the International Strategy Group at BU. She is a Visiting Professor at University Sains Malaysia, the National University - University Kebangsaan Malaysia and the University of Malaysia Sarawak.

She has enjoyed a flourishing international, academic social science career to-date, having worked extensively in Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Her research interests reflect an abiding fascination with culture and diversity, focusing on marginalisation. The main author of the ground-breaking book Islam and Social Work, she has published on faith and feminism and diversity; marginalised Indigenous groups and environmental issues; mental health and disabilities.
