Lawrence J. Morris

Lawrence J. Morris served 27 years as an Army judge advocate, retiring as a colonel in 2009. He spent most of his career in or near the courtroom, serving as both a prosecutor and defense counsel, in locations in the U.S. and overseas. He served as chair of the criminal law department at The Judge Advocate General's School; Chief of Criminal Law for the U.S. Army; and Chief of the Army's War Crimes Task Force. As staff judge advocate for the 10th Mountain Division, he supervised the Fort Drum, NY JAG office and deployed with the division to Bosnia and Herzegovina. He served as the staff judge advocate (general counsel), United States Military Academy, and as the Chief Public Defender for the U.S. Army, supervising Army defense counsel worldwide. He deployed to Iraq to help establish the Law & Order Task Force, designed to help Iraqis improve their investigative and judicial practices, and he concluded his career as the Chief Prosecutor, Office of Military Commissions, 2007-09, where he was responsible for war crimes prosecutions conducted at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
