David R. Bamford

Professor David Bamford is an experienced industrialist/academic who has published over 100 articles, book chapters and reports as well as presented widely on his topics to both academic and practitioner audiences. His multiple publications include two co-authored books: Managing Quality; Essential Guide to Operations Management. David's research interests are: operations management improvement strategies; quality management; sports operations management; strategic organisational change; leadership. E.g. His work at the London 2012 Paralympics, assessing athletes perceptions of the operational resources design and delivery, influenced design aspects of the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Games.

David has received many awards for research: Innovative Partnership Award - Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC): Knowledge Transfer Partnerships; Technology Strategy Board; South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SWYPFT); and for teaching: University of Manchester: Distinguished Achievement Medal – Teacher of the Year; University Award for Teaching Excellence. Multiple Department Teaching Awards.

Knowledge transfer has been at the centre of David’s career strategy. It provides a focus and direction for his research, grant applications, publications, teaching, and major administrative roles. Through it he has a significant involvement in knowledge creation and transfer in conjunction with various partner organisations, such as the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the NHS, Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers, The Manufacturing Institute. David has also led related modules in Executive Education, working with companies such as TATA, BP, JCB, BAE, etc.

David’s current academic activities are under-pinned by a strong industrial and commercial background which culminated in the position of Operations Manager (Pharmaceutical) for Courtaulds Packaging. The position was created to manage manufacturing and assembly operations for exponential sales growth and the work involved establishing complex logistical relationships with worldwide suppliers, contractors and customers.
