An author, a teacher and for some twenty years an active researcher into motivation in learning, Alan was until May 2011 a Principal Psychologist in Glasgow.
As well as books, Alan has written several staff development programmes including Promoting Positive Behaviour in the Primary School, Promoting Positive Behaviour in the Secondary School and the award winning Bullyproofing Our School. He had a weekly column in The Scotsman for several years and has been a regular contributor to the TES Scotland. He has served on government advisory groups, delivered a seminar for the Education Committee of the Scottish Parliament, presented at the Edinburgh International Book Festival and provided keynote addresses to the annual Education Scotland conference and The Scottish Learning Festival.
His first book, The Motivated School, was published by Sage Publications, London, in 2003 and has since been translated into Chinese. He was commissioned by the Scottish Government to produce a training programme on motivation in 2005 and worked with College Development Network to develop The Motivated College training programme. Alan has worked with schools in England, including Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Bristol, Kent, the Isle of Man and Jersey. He has worked with Queens University Belfast and the National Behaviour Support Service of Ireland to disseminate his work in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. His second book, Motivating Every Learner, was published in May 2009. His work has been translated into German, Moldovan, Japanese and Ukrainian . Educators from Japan, New Zealand, Spain and Denmark have visited Scotland to study his work.
His latest book, Knowing and Growing; Insights for Developing Self and Others is published in October 2017 by the Centre for Confidence and Wellbeing.
