Felipe Hernández

Felipe Hernández Ph.D. is a Colombian-born architect who lives and works in the United Kingdom. He is Associate Professor of Architecture and Urban Studies in the Department of Architecture at the University of Cambridge. He is also Fellow Architect and Director of Studies at King's College, Cambridge.

Professor Hernández has worked extensively on Latin America and other areas Global South, including Africa, South East Asia and the Caribbean.

His research explores the intersection between architecture and urbanism in conditions of 'coloniality'. He work challenges the univocality of architectural history, and the terms in which it perpetuates disciplinary hierarchies that exclude non-white, non-western, or non-sanctioned practices. His collaborative work draws attention to the informal production of space and seeks to develop decolonial methods to unsettle traditional structures of historical inscription and analysis.

Between 2018 and 2021 he acted as the first Latin American to be elected as Director of the Centre of Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge.
