Dr. Paul Gross, "The Berry Doctor", is author of the 2009 McGraw-Hill book, Superfruits.
He is a scientist and was an expert on cardiovascular and brain physiology over a 25 year academic career. He did extensive award-winning, published research on the brain, cardiovascular system, bones and antioxidant drugs. It was during his work on antioxidant mechanisms in 1993 that he began to envision the need for consumer education about whole foods, fruit phytochemicals and nutrients, dietary antioxidants, berries and superfruits.
Dr. Paul has a Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio State University, Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois, and PhD in Physiology from the University of Glasgow, Scotland. During his academic and research careers, he held positions as a neuroscience fellow, Laboratory of Cerebral Metabolism at the US National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the State University of New York-Stony Brook, Associate Professor of Surgery & Physiology, Queen's University and Director of Neurosurgical Research, Kingston General Hospital in Kingston, Ontario.
In 1986, the Heinz Karger Memorial Foundation of Switzerland recognized Dr. Paul's research on brain blood vessels with their Memorial Prize while the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario appointed him as Research Scholar for 1987-1992. During 1994-7, he was a science analyst for the international venture capital fund, Canadian Neuroscience Partners.
He co-founded Neurochem Inc., a neuroscience biotechnology company in 1992 (Kingston and Montreal), CroMedica Inc., an international clinical trials management company, in 1997 (Ottawa, Victoria and San Diego) and Berry Health Inc., a nutritional supplements firm in 2004 (Vancouver).
Dr. Paul was a founding member of the International Berry Health Association based in Oregon and served on the initial steering committee as an industry liaison for the US National Berry Crops Initiative and Caneberry Advisory Committee.
He published 85 peer reviewed papers or chapters over a 25-year academic career, edited a 3-volume book on circumventricular brain structures controlling body fluids and was senior author of a book on the Chinese wolfberry ("goji", Lycium barbarum L.) (2006) with Xiaoping Zhang, MD and Richard Zhang.
Awarded a First Dan black belt in the Korean martial art of taekwondo at age 53, Dr. Paul practices careful nutrition and daily physical conditioning.
He currently serves as a science and product development consultant to berry farmers, fruit processors, fruit product manufacturers and the media. From 2004-10, he published a free newsletter on the science and nutrition of berries and superfruits -- the Berry Doctor's Journal.
