I like writing and teaching about, and personally retracing, Americans' engagement with the world, especially in the early years of the United States. I'm also fascinated by the long life of American exceptionalism, a term far more often applauded or condemned by public commentators than really understood for its complexity. Before I became an historian I was an apartment manager, a Congressional intern, a CPA, and a waiter.
