Alexander Cheng

Alexander H.-D. Cheng is Dean of Engineering at the University of Mississippi. He obtained his B.S. degree from the National Taiwan University, M.S. from the University of Missouri--Columbia, and Ph.D. from Cornell University, all in Civil Engineering. He was a faculty member at Cornell University, Columbia University, and the University of Delaware, before he joined the University of Mississippi in 2001 as Chair of Civil Engineering Department, and became Dean in 2009.

His research interests include nanomechanics, meshless method, poromechanics, and groundwater flow. He is the Co-Editor of the journal Engineering Analysis with Boundary Elements, and was an associate editor for the Journal of Engineering Mechanics, ASCE. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the book series Progress in Water Resources, WIT Press. He has authored three books, and edited four specialty books, plus seven conference proceedings. He has published more than one hundred journal papers. He was the co-founder of two conference series: the Biot Conference on Poromechanics, and the International Conference on Saltwater Intrusion and Coastal Aquifers. He was the recipient of the Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize from ASCE, and the Basic Research Award from the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics, National Research Council. He currently serves as the Vice President of Engineering Mechanics Institute, American Society of Civil Engineers. He was formerly the Vice President for Academic Affairs of the American Institute of Hydrology. He is also on the Board of Directors of the Wessex Institute of Technology.
