Born in Columbus, Ohio and raised in Iowa City, Iowa, John Bruns developed a serious interest in film in 1982, when his parents bought him a Super 8mm movie camera. As an undergraduate at Notre Dame, John studied both film and English literature. He graduated with a double major in those respective areas in 1992 and then enrolled in a short-lived graduate program at the University of Southern California called "Film, Literature & Culture" which was comprised of the then-named School of Cinema-Television (now known as the School of Cinematic Arts) and the Department of English. He received his Ph.D. from that program in 2002. Currently, he is Professor of Film Studies at the College of Charleston.
