Kathy Kuhl

Kathy Kuhl did not plan to homeschool her son. Getting him and his homework off to school was hard enough! But after years trying to help him succeed in school despite his learning difficulties, they started to homeschool as he began fourth grade. Homeschooling gave her the freedom to customize curriculum to his interests and strengths, while accommodating his weaknesses, and working to address them.

After homeschooling him until his graduation, Kathy interviewed 64 parents who also homeschooled students with learning challenges to create Homeschooling Your Struggling Learner, a handbook for parents or anyone helping a child with learning challenges.

Next, she wrote Staying Sane as You Homeschool: Balancing Your Priorities, a short book of practical ideas for parents. (She did not ask her kids if she was qualified to write on this topic!)

Struggling learners need help to keep going, but so do many other children. Her third book, Encouraging Your Child, is a short guide for all parents on how to encourage teens and children effectively.

At William and Mary, Kathy earned teaching certificates in math and English. She taught middle school in Maryland and homeschool co-ops in Virginia.

Since her son graduated, she helps new and veteran homeschoolers, giving phone and Skype consultations and workshops across the U.S. and internationally. She has led homeschool groups and served on the board of homeschool organizations. She enjoys reading, traveling, and hiking.
