Daniel F. Pinnow

Daniel F. Pinnow is a German leadership author, management trainer, and organizational theorist who has spent more than two decades helping senior executives, CEOs, and board members become more effective – not by teaching them new techniques, but by helping them understand themselves.

He is the Founder and Managing Partner of the Academy of Systemic Leadership (dp-Akademie) in Germany, and is widely recognized since 1998 as the pioneer of systemic leadership in the German-speaking world. Holding a Master's degree in Business Administration (Diplom-Kaufmann) and serving as Associate Professor (a.o. Professor) for Leadership and Organization, Pinnow combines academic rigor with over 25 years of his own experience as a CEO and board member in German companies – including over 15 years as Managing Director of one of Germany's most respected leadership academies and several years as a member of the board of directors of Cognos AG, one of Europe's largest private education corporations.

He is the author of eight books on leadership, management, and organizational development. His landmark work, Führen – Worauf es wirklich ankommt (Springer Gabler), has appeared in six editions and sell +15.000 Copies been translated into English and Chinese, and is considered a standard reference in German leadership literature. His English-language book, Leadership – What Really Matters: A Handbook on Systemic Leadership (Springer, 2011), brings his systemic approach to an international audience and sells +40.000 Chapter Downloads in USA and sells +250.000 copies in China.

At the heart of his work is the Spheres Model of Systemic Leadership, which he developed in 2014. The model describes leadership as the interplay of three interconnected dimensions: the leader's own personality, the relational sphere of their team, and the broader organizational system. Its central premise is simple but demanding: before a leader can effectively shape a team or an organization, they must first be willing to understand – and lead – themselves. This inside-out approach has been applied in leadership development programs across a wide range of German companies, from family-owned Mittelstand firms to DAX-listed corporations.

In addition to his work as a trainer and coach for senior executives, Pinnow has held teaching positions at the Technische Universität München, Hochschule Fresenius, and the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing. For a decade, from 1998 to 2008, he authored a regular column in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) and has contributed to Handelsblatt and Die Welt.

His seminars and coaching sessions – offered through the dp-Akademie – are sought by senior leaders who have already developed strong management skills and are ready to work at a deeper level: on their personality, their impact on others, and their understanding of the complex systems they lead.
