I was born in a steel-making town in the Allegheny Mountains of west-central PA. My dad worked in the mill, and my mom stayed at home with me and my siblings [1 sister and 2 brothers], of which I was the youngest. From an early time, I accepted Jesus as my Savior. I wanted to become a doctor, and things fell into place for me to do just that. In 1985, I received my MD. I served in the Army until 1992, and then returned home to join a pediatric practice there. I got married in 1995 to a farmer who now grows organic vegetables and fruits, especially garlic and blueberries. We have two children who excel in tumbling and dance.
I went to Sierra Leone in 1985, during my 4th year in medical school, spending two months in Mattru, taking care of the children on the pediatric ward. I returned to Africa in 1994, but this time to Kenya, spending a month serving the children at Tenwek Hospital. Journals I kept through those travels helped me in writing assignments I had for the Institute of Children's Literature. The last one was to write a book--Into Africa! I didn't have time to work on getting it published until 2006, but within two years I had a publisher and soon it was in print! The series continues on now, and I plan on having five or six books to complete it.
