Bud Connell

Born to young parents, a mother from Texas and a father from Kentucky, he excelled in school and was encouraged to skip grades. He became a radio announcer during his high school years, abandoned higher education, entered the work force at 18 as a full-time radio personality, and was promoted to broadcast programming executive at 22.

As a New Orleans on-the-air personality and programmer of WNOE, he held among the highest ratings ever recorded. Two years later, as station manager, Connell designed and programmed WFUN in Miami, overwhelming ensconced competition in only sixty days. A year later, he revamped KXOK in St. Louis and delivered top ratings in just three months. All three became benchmark stations and were copied coast-to-coast. In 1965, in a national ratings sweep, KXOK was determined to be the Number One Rated Independent Radio Station in the entire USA.

Following his Saint Louis success, he executive produced music specials for network television, and formed his own company, consulting major broadcast stations coast-to-coast. Most became and remained dominant in their markets for years afterward. He is credited with creating several new broadcast formats and furthering the success of format radio in its heyday. His employers and clients were among broadcasting's elite.

Connell has recently produced countless films and videos for business, industry and public service worldwide. He is recipient of a National Vision Award and winner of seven Tellys for outstanding writing, producing and directing. He was recently inducted into the Media Halls of Fame and the Radio Hall of Fame in Saint Louis along with Paul Harvey and Harry Caray. He has one son, John, who is a TV director, art director and set builder in the film and television industry.
