I was born in Wiltshire, and lived in Warminster during the heady days of the 1970s, when the town was a flying saucer hotspot. I interacted with and observed the skywatchers who had come to look for UFOs on the local hills. My experiences, of the Wiltshire countryside, ufology and friendship have informed my writing, both fiction and non-fiction.
I am the co-author or sole author of three novels that revisit these experiences and recast them in fictional format, and three non-fiction books on Warminster's UFO mystery.
The Dereham Nodes are a series of loosely interconnected novels set in the fictional town of Dereham. They centre on people who take UFOs and the paranormal seriously, on others who take it not-so-seriously; on those whose lives re deeply affected by these phenomena, and people whose lives only briefly touch and intersect them. Along the way there are spies, hitmen, young adults falling in and out of love, madness, and friendship.
The non-fiction "In Alien Heat", co-authored with my late friend John Ries, is a sceptical take on the Warminster phenomena that led to a resurgence of interest in the mystery. "UFO Warminster: Cradle of Contact" is co-authored with my friend Kevin Goodman, and is the unexpected tale of what happens when ordinary, excitable teenagers meet unusual phenomena and interesting people. Kevin talked to... something... and "UFO Warminster" tells the story of those events. 2015 was the fiftieth anniversary of the Warminster mystery, and "History of a Mystery" provides a vanilla introduction to the mystery with little critical comment, but brings the story up to the present time.
I also edited the writings of my friend and "In Alien Heat" co-author John after he died; the stories, poems and lyrics he wrote can be found in "The Dead John Miscellany".
I also write poems, take photographs, and occasionally make music. I also like to study and read. Over the last sixteen years, I have completed an MA in Popular Culture, a Postgraduate Diploma in Science Studies, and Diploma in the Humanities, including two creative writing modules. I'm now undertaking various on-line Coursera courses, centring around sociology, politics and conflict.
The UFO Warminster phenomenon is described in my books, and at www.ufo-warminster.co.uk.
