Valentine Casey

Doctor Valentine (Val) Casey is a Senior Researcher at Dundalk Institute of Technology, Dundalk, Ireland. His previous roles include Global Software Development (GSD) Research Area Leader and Senior Lecturer in Software Testing and Quality at Bournemouth University, Dorset, UK. He also pioneered GSD research in the University of Limerick in Ireland were he Lectured and held the position of Research Fellow with Lero the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre.

Val has been awarded a PhD in Computer Science and MSc. in Software Re-Engineering from the University of Limerick and a BSc. in Economics & Management from the University of London. Prior to undertaking his academic career he spent over 20 years working in the software industry where his roles included, Project Manager, Test Manager, Software Quality Manager and Software Development Consultant. He also successfully established and managed a number of virtual software teams.

Given his experience and background it is not surprising that Val's research focus is GSD and virtual software team operation and management. He has undertaken four independent studies in these areas over the last twelve years. His work has explored many different aspects of these important topics. Based on the results achieved he has published extensively in these areas. The strength of his research is that it is industry based with a strong professional and academic focus. Val continues to carry out research in both of these areas as well as Software Process Improvement(SPI).

Val continues to push the research boundaries and his current focus is SPI and GSD in the area of medical device software development. This includes the development of a process assessment and improvement model for medical device software development. In addition based on his previous and current research he has developed a GSD model to facilitate the outsourcing and off-shoring of medical device software development.
