Ian I. Mitroff
Ian I. Mitroff (www.mitroff.net ) is an organizational theorist, strategist, and consultant. He is best known for his pioneering work in crisis management. In recent years he has focused on the growing impacts of social media and technology through the lens of crisis management.
He is noted for a wide range of contributions in the fields of strategic planning, management information systems, the philosophy of science, and workplace spirituality and human values.
He has advised and influenced academic, corporate, and government leaders in more than 20 countries. Today, his focus is on global crises, such as those posed by technology, human-caused climate-related disasters, leadership around the world; and intense political polarization.
He is president of the consulting firm, Mitroff Crisis Management, which he founded in 1995. His company has worked with major firms and operations such as Dow Chemical, The American Red Cross, Hewlett Packard, Los Angeles Police Department and Kraft Foods.
Mitroff has written extensively, publishing 37 books, more than 350 articles, op-ed pieces, papers, and blogs. His book, Managing Crises Before They Happen: What Every Executive Needs to Know about Crisis Management, is considered the bible of crisis management as practiced in the U.S and internationally.
He is Professor Emeritus from the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business and The Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.
Currently, he is a Senior Research Affiliate with the Center for Catastrophic Risk Management at the University of California, Berkeley.
He is a Fellow of The American Psychological Association, The American Association for the Advancement of Science, and The American Academy of Management. He is a past President of The International Society for the Systems Sciences.
He has a BS, MS, and PhD in Engineering from UC Berkeley. His minor for the PhD was the philosophy of social systems science.
He has an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of Stockholm.
