Tom Mahon

Tom Mahon is an Irish writer and historian. In addition to his groundbreaking books on the IRA he has written numerous articles for magazines and newspapers, including for the Irish Times and History Ireland and has given multiple newspaper and radio interviews.

He has presented his research at historical meetings both in the United States and Ireland, including at the Irish Civil War National Conference hosted by University College Cork in June 2022.

Tom's first book Decoding the IRA, co-authored with cryptologist James Gillogly, has been described as 'a masterful work'. His latest book The Ballycotton Job: An Incredible True Story of IRA Pirates is a fast paced account of the IRA's most daring and brilliant operation. The incident shocked Michael Collins, threw the British government into disarray and changed the course of the subsequent Irish Civil War.

Dr Tom studied medicine at University College Dublin, going on to complete his post graduate studies in Boston, where he was a member of the Medical Faculty at Harvard Medical School. Currently he lives in Honolulu with his wife and son and returns to Ireland two to three times a year. He has spent decades visiting archives and libraries as well as historical sites throughout Ireland and Britain.
