I decided that I wanted to be a trout fishing guide about 30 years ago when I found myself staring out the window of the classroom I was teaching in, which was tantalisingly close to the famous Motueka River. I finally took the plunge, tossed in my teaching job and I'm still at it today in a different location. Les Hill and I wrote some landmark books together like Stalking Trout and Images Of Silver. They helped establish my guiding credentials. When my wife, Raewyn and I built a new house we put in a special guest accommodation. For a decade or more we guided and hosted anglers from around the globe. They were wonderful years. Grip 'N Grin is a sometimes serious and sometimes lighthearted memoir of those years.
