Geoffrey Bell

Geoffrey Bell was born in Belfast and active in the civil rights movement in the North of Ireland from 1967 to 1972. After coming to London he was in the Irish and labour movement politics

As well as The Twilight of Unionism (2022) he is the author of The Protestants of Ulster (1976), Troublesome Business: the Labour Party and Ireland (1982), The British in Ireland (1984) and Hesitant Comrades: The Irish Revolution and the British Labour Movement (2016). He also wrote the television documentaries The Cause of Ireland (Channel 4, 1983) and Pack Up the Troubles (Channel 4, 1991). He curated the exhibition Ireland: What Was That About? (Tower Museum, Londonderry/Derry, 2010).

He currently writes for the socialist media in Britain. He is a regular speaker at labour movement events and is active in Labour for Irish Unity. He is an occasional contributor to History Ireland and has spoken at academic conferences in Britain, Ireland, and Europe. He graduated in History and Political Science from Trinity College Dublin and received his PhD in Politics from the University of Leeds
