Deborah Shapley

Deborah Shapley has written about science, technology and defense policy for a number of publications, notably Science, Nature, The Financial Times, The Washington Post, The New York Times and the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.

Her current interests are climate change, also urban forests, also what's happening to the oceans.

"I recall we children being walked to the school stairwell to practice in case of nuclear attack. Later, during the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, I recall grownup men looking scared."

"During the Cold War, no one could see how it could go away. But it did," she says.

"Global warming is the new overarching challenge. But it's heavy stuff to think about.

So I relax by caring for trees."
