Liza Bakewell

Liza Bakewell is a writer and an anthropologist. Her most recent publications include Madre: Perilous Journeys with a Spanish Noun (2011/2012) and A Gateless Garden: Quotes by Maine Women Writers (2015). In 2016 A Gateless Garden was awarded the Maine Literary Award. Bakewell was a professor at Brown University from 1992-2013, during which time she received numerous grants for her research from the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Ford Foundation, the Davis Foundation and the Fulbright Program. She has also taught at Bowdoin College and Colgate University. She earned her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her Ph.D. in anthropology from Brown University. She currently lives in Maine with her family.
