Charles E. Dumas

Charles Dumas has been with Lombard Street Research since 1998 and is Chairman and Chief Economist. His work encompasses global issues, including China, Japan and the US, as well as the European economy, and he is a recognised authority on financial markets and the US economy. He has had extensive experience in the financial world as an investment banker as well as an economist and journalist. He is a sought-after speaker on global economic issues and hosts LSR’s seminars.

Charles went up to St John’s College, Cambridge University, 1965 as a mathematics scholar, and came down in 1968 after taking finals exams in maths and then economics. He worked on tax reform for the Conservative Party under Iain MacLeod in 1968-71, and as a journalist at The Economist in 1971-74. He was then European Economist for General Motors, 1974-78, and an international strategist in Detroit in 1978-80.

Charles worked as an international economist in J P Morgan from 1980 to 1982, servicing the Treasury, then as an investment banker in capital markets, covering New York City clients in 1983-84 and British clients in 1984-86. He was head of research in London in 1986-88, and moved back to New York as a Managing Director in Mergers and Acquisitions in 1988-92. He then worked as a boutique investment banker in Czechoslovakia, and started a thesis on the sources of economic growth at the London School of Economics, before starting work at Lombard Street Research.
