Alice C. Hudson

Spent 39 years in Map Division, Research Libraries, NYPL, and Chief of same from 1981-2009. With almost half a million maps from the 17th century to the present, it was a wonderful cartographic life. While there I curated several map exhibitions, and Heading West, Touring West, with Barbara Cohen Stratyner, was one result. Another book I assisted in creating, through research assistance to its primary author, was the Historical Atlas of New York City, with credit on the first few editions only. I have numerous published articles in map and geography periodicals, the most important related to women and mapmaking. With my co-author, Mary Ritzlin, we created a directory of some 300 pre-20th century women in cartography. This work is now scheduled to evolve into an exhibition on the topic in 2015, more info later...

There is a neat picture of moi in Small Worlds: Maps and Mapmaking, in the setting of the Map Division, my second home for years, maybe my first home...

Curent research relates to the some 1000 pre-1900 NYC mapmakers: engravers, designers, lithographers, publishers, mapsellers, etc. Will soon appear, we hope, as a public service,on the Map Division website.
