Jody McBrien was born in Niagara Falls, NY and grew up in western New York along the shores of Chautauqua Lake. Her love of travel began when she was 16 and traveled to England with her family. Since then, she has traveled to 35 states in the US and the same number of countries in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America.
McBrien's passion of working with war-affected families began in 2002, when working with resettled refugees in Clarkston, Georgia. She has worked with resettled refugees in the US and New Zealand, and with war survivors in Ghana and Uganda.
Dr. McBrien is an Associate Professor at the University of South Florida, Sarasota-Manatee campus, where she teaches sociological aspects of US and international education.
