Christopher J. Hall

Chris Hall is Professor of Applied Linguistics in the School of Education, Language and Psychology at York St John University, UK. His principal area of research and teaching is applied linguistics, and he is especially interested in social and cognitive perspectives on English as an international language. After obtaining his PhD in Linguistics at the University of Southern California in 1987, he worked for many years at the University of the Americas (UDLA) in Puebla, Mexico.

He has published several books, including: as author, Morphology and Mind (Routledge, 1992; re-issued 2013) and An Introduction to Language and Linguistics. Breaking the Language Spell (Continuum, 2005); as co-author, Introducing Language in Use (Routledge, 2nd edition, 2014) and Mapping Applied Linguistics. A Guide for Students and Practitioners (Routledge, 3rd edition, 2026); and as co-editor, Ontologies of English (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and Vulnerabilities, Challenges and Risks in Applied Linguistics (Multilingual Matters, 2021).
