David J. Smith

David J. Smith is a career coach, educational consultant and trainer as well as the president of the Forage Center for Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Education, Inc. He is a recipient of the William Kreidler Award for Distinguished Service in the field of Conflict Resolution, given by the Association for Conflict Resolution. Previously a senior manager and head of national outreach at the U.S. Institute of Peace, he teaches part time at George Mason University in the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution and in the School of Education at Drexel University. He has also taught at Georgetown University, Towson University, Goucher College, and Harford Community College. David formerly served as chair of the Rockville, Maryland Human Rights Commission. During 2003-2004 he was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar teaching at the University of Tartu in Estonia.

He wrote his first book, Legal Research and Writing, while at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland. He is editor of Peacebuilding in Community Colleges: A Teaching Resource which was published by U.S. Institute of Peace Press in 2013. In 2016 he published Peace Jobs: A Student's Guide to Starting a Career Working for Peace through Information Age Publishing.

Smith has a BA from American University, an MS from George Mason University, and a JD from the University of Baltimore.

David frequently consults on peacebuilding strategies for college and youth audiences and is available for talks and presentations.

He is married and has two children. His wife teaches nursing at Montgomery College in Silver Spring, MD. David is based in Rockville, MD.
