John Howard is a former Chairman of the Financial Regulator's Consumer Panel, and was a Non Executive Director on the Boards of The Financial Ombudsman Service and the energy regulator Ofgem. He was appointed by HM Treasury as a Commissioner on the Equitable Life Payments Commission and was a member of the Treasury's Retail Financial Services Group.
A solicitor by training, he became one of the front line voices on BBC Radio 4 in the 1980s and 90s winning a number of journalism awards. He presented more than 1000 editions of the daily consumer magazine programme ‘You and Yours’, along with numerous editions of the phone-in series 'Tuesday Call' and 'Call John Howard'.
In addition, for Radio 4, he presented 'An Unfortunate Turn of Events' (about corporate cock-ups) and ‘Call to Account’, in which he challenged the heads of the UKs most important service companies. On Radio 5 he devised and presented 'The Leading Edge' and he was a presenter and reporter on ‘Out of Court' and 'Nature' both on BBC2 TV.
He set up Consumer Insights in 2010 to advise on regulation in financial services and energy.
