David Redles

David Redles is professor of history at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. His first book, Hitler's Millennial Reich: Apocalyptic Belief and the Search for Salvation, attempts to explain the historical and psychological factors that turned certain Germans into Nazis. Specifically it focuses on how periods of rapid and radical change are often interpreted as times of utter collapse, necessitating the rise of a messianic figure and millenarian movement that attempts to save the world by cleansing it of its impurities. Redles has also contributed chapters on this subject to the edited collections, War in Heaven/Heaven on Earth: Theories of the Apocalyptic (2005); End of Days: Essays on the Apocalypse from Antiquity to Modernity (2009); The Fundamentalist Mindset: Psychological Perspectives on Religion, Violence, and History (2010); The Oxford Handbook of Millennialism (2011); The Paranoid Apocalypse: A Hundred-Year Retrospective on the Protocols of the Elders of Zion (2011); and Hitler's 'Mein Kampf' and the Holocaust: A Prelude to Genocide (2022).
