George Demetrion

George Demetrion has worked in the field of adult basic education for over 30 years. He managed a small group tutoring center in Hartford, CT for 17 years. He has also published over a dozen professional articles on the pedagogy and politics of adult literacy education. His book, Conflicting Paradigms in Adult Literacy Education: In Quest of a U.S. Democratic Politics of Literacy (2005), represents a synthesizes of his work in the field of adult literacy.

In addition to his professional work in adult education, Demetrion, who converted to Christianity in 1972, and has audited courses at Hartford and Bethel Seminary at San Diego, is an aspiring Christian scholar. As is the case in the field of adult basic education, his formal writing on biblical studies, contemporary theology, and church history is grounded in his desire to live out the Christian faith in his daily life at home, work, church, and in his interface with contemporary culture. His new book, In Quest of a Vital Protestant Center: An Ecumenical Evangelical Perspective (2014) is a culmination of a 40 year effort to participate and to stimulate creative dialogue between moderate mainline Protestant and evangelical thought and practice within the direct congregational and broader seminarian and academic levels.

Throughout his career, in both fields, Demetrion has been engaged in creative dialogue at the intersection between critical practice and cutting edge theory in the effort to break through to new insight and creative change in places of engagement where such work matters.
