Joseph M. Henning is an associate professor of history at Rochester Institute of Technology. His work focuses on the history of US foreign relations and modern Japan. He is the editor of Interpreting the Mikado's Empire, which received Honorable Mention for the 2022 Link-Kuehl Prize for Documentary Editing awarded by the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations (SHAFR). He is also the author of Outposts of Civilization, which won the 2000 SHAFR Bernath Book Prize and was published in a Japanese translation. Henning has also taught at Saint Vincent College and served as a Fulbright Scholar at Tohoku University.
