I am a professor of Japanese culture and Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. My research, teaching, and writing encompass the general areas of film and media, material culture, and East Asian studies. I've written on Japanese cinema and popular culture, including Japanese animation; early, silent, orphan, and "lost" film; nuclear history and the visual image; film and media history, historiography, archiving, and preservation; material culture studies, ephemera, and collecting, and digital humanities scholarship.
