I’m a physician trained in pediatrics and epidemiology. I’ve worked in public health for nearly 40 years, including as a professor of public health and in city, state, and federal government agencies. Those government positions include Senior Deputy Director for the District of Columbia Department of Health, the Commissioner of Health for Philadelphia and the Commissioner of Health for New York City. I’ve authored or coauthored more than 100 scientific publications and two books for general readers: Prescription for a Healthy Nation (Beacon Press), and Saving Gotham: A Billionaire Mayor, Activist Doctors, and The Fight for Eight Million Lives (Norton). I’ve just published the textbook Prevention of Diseases in Populations: From Biology to Policy (Jones & Bartlett Learning) under the name Thomas Farley.
