Daniel Thiery

Daniel E. Thiery is a Professor of Medieval History at Iona College and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Dr. Thiery is currently researching and writing a book which explores the history of violence in Western Civilization from ancient Greece to the present age.

Dr. Thiery earned his BA in History from Providence College and his MA and PhD in Medieval Studies from the Centre for Medieval Studies, University of Toronto. His teaching, research and writing focuses on the enactment, control, and societal valuation of violence in European History. He has focused most of his research on the influence of medieval Christian beliefs on attitudes toward cooperation and conflict. His prior study has been awarded grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Richard III Society and the Medieval Academy of America.
