Mildred Alpern is currently an author and self-taught photographer of nature as well as other lively subjects. She is a rare NYT Metropolitan Diarist, having contributed nonfiction, poetry,and photography to the column. She is a regular contributor to Mirrorless Photo Tips, an online blog dealing with the real-world experience of using mirrorless cameras. She grew up in Boston, Massachusetts, and is a graduate of Girls' Latin School, Boston University summa cum laude, and Columbia University Teachers College. She is formerly a high school Advanced Placement European History teacher. She served as a consultant for the College Board's Advanced Placement program and has written a guide to the program as well as articles for scholarly magazines, some of which are included in anthologies on history teaching. She is included in Marquis's Who's Who in America, and Women's Who's Who in America.
