Lynn Michell

I was born in Liverpool, then carted round the world, the daughter of a soldier, to Kenya, Tripoli, Cyprus, Germany, Malta, Portsmouth, Twickenham and Beaconsfield. I went to 17 random schools and lived in 28 houses, flats, tents and other accommodation, most in army barracks. Two postings were to war zones.

I disappeared into books as the safest place to be. I returned from Cyprus to Birmingham University to study English Literature and Theatre Arts, then slid sideways into the psychology of language for my PhD. My slide continued into sociology and medical sociology, always listening to the stories of other people and giving them a voice.

I wrote on the side while working as a researcher and university lecturer. My debut novel, White Lies, was runner up in Scotland's Robert Louis Stevenson award and I've been short-listed for many short story competitions. My sixteen books are published by mainstream and independent publishers including The Women's Press, Longman and HarperCollins.

I also run Linen Press, the only independent women's press in the UK. www.linen-press.com

I live in France where a new house that was only outer walls and a roof is now a home with terraces and natural pool. It's taken eight years, hands-on, and is very much my own.
