It seems that modern-day work environments deprive us of empathy ; empathy towards our surroundings and as a consequence towards one another. In an organisational setting, we constantly strive to create a lean, instrumental and outcome-oriented workspace. But we are switching off from what’s around us. Designers and facility managers need to employ techniques to re-engage with workplace employees.
It is my ardent belief that in our pursuit of lean environments we are denying people the ability to attach and gain traction with one another. Time and again, the research evidence confirm this phenomena of workplace isolation. My writings express a compulsion to inform readers that office designers are all too often pushed in the wrong direction. Our preoccupation with functionality, technology and output leaves no space for the human condition.
