Patrick Dilley

Patrick Dilley is Professor of Higher Education and Qualitative Research, and Professor of Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He earned a B.A. in English from The University of Central Oklahoma, an M.S.Ed. in Higher Education from the University of Kansas in 1994, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from the University of Southern California in 2000. Dilley teaches graduate courses in college student cultures, history of higher education, student development theory, gender in higher education, women in higher education, college men and masculinities, college student sexuality, and masculinity in the United States.

Dilley’s scholarship centers primarily on the historical and cultural aspects of college students, particularly non-heterosexual students. His book Gay Liberation to Campus Assimilation received the 2020 Outstanding Book Award from the Association for the Study of Higher Education. His earlier research has been recognized by the American College Personnel Association’s Standing Committee for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Awareness. He also was named an Emerging Scholar by ACPA, as well awarded the Annuit Copetis award for emerging professional. He is currently working on two projects: A biography of the educator and actress Beverlee McKinsey, placing her life and career within the context of changing social and cultural opportunities for women in 20th Century America, and another on the history of college students during World War II.

Dilley has served as Associate Editor for The Journal of Gay and Lesbian Issues in Education, editorial board member of The Journal of Student Affairs Research Into Practice, editorial board member of The Journal of First-Year Students and Students in Transition, and editorial board members of the Journal of College Student Development from 2006 to 2014.
